Scary Proposed Mississippi Drone Laws
A Proposed Drone Law (Senate Bill 2262) in Mississippi is proposes to allow airspace ownership for landowners.
Another Bill can also be problematic (House Bill 291) as it would restrict collecting data from critical infrastructures or correctional facilities. Which sounds nice but…
Critical infrastructures includes 13 categories including
Commercial transport vessel operating on any inland waterway or ocean
Any facility enclosed by a fence or physical barrier or marked with a sign.

Take action!
For the House Bill (HB 291), please respectfully reach out to Representative Nick Bain. His page is http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/members/house/bain.xml
For the Senate Bill (SB 2262), please respectfully reach out to Senator Brice Wiggins. His page is http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/members/senate/wiggins.xml
If you’re a resident of Mississippi, find your local legislators and contact them expressing (again, respectfully) your displeasure with the bill.

Mapping Highway 1 damage with a drone
You may have seen videos of the recent damage that occurred on Highway 1 near Big Sur in California.
Heavy rainfall caused a portion of the highway to be washed out, creating a giant hole on the road.
Kathleen Tuite shared a 3D model of the damaged area on Sketchfab.
With the right tools, volumes can be measured, and precise distances to help rebuild this entire segment.

Drones for good
There were two similar stories this week in the news, both involving finding people in the cold using drones.
The first story is out of NC where a 78-year old man was found on the day he was reported missing.
The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office used their newly acquired thermal camera to locate him as the temperature were dropping in the 30s.

The same thing happened in Rutherford country Tennessee with a missing juvenile who was spotted in only 13 minutes by a drone equipped with FLIR camera.
